"How do I make sure the roses I give "say" the right thing?"

Although roses get their color from combinations of anthocyanins (red), carotenoids (yellow), and delphinidin (blue) the legend, history, romance and language of roses is much more sentimental. Different colors of roses traditionally are meant to convey different messages. The Language of Roses
Red - Love, beauty, courage, respect, romantic love, passion
 Coral - desire, passion
 Orange - desire, enthusiasm, passion
 Peach - gratitude, appreciation, admiration, sympathy
 Pink - grace, gentility, happiness
 Pale Pink - grace, joy, gentility, gratitude
 Deep Pink - appreciation, admiration, sincerity, sympathy
 White - truth, innocence, silence, sincerity, secrecy, reverence, humility, youthfulness, charm
 Yellow - friendship, freedom, congratulations, joy, gladness, delight
Another question we hear this time of year is "Why are roses more expensive at Valentines Day?"
You probably appreciate how special roses are for Valentine's Day but did you ever think of how amazing it is to have roses in the middle of winter?
Red roses are in highest demand at Valentine's Day. Growers need anywhere from 50-70 days to produce roses. During this time several smaller blooms are sacrificed for the larger, long-stemmed roses. Growers also hire extra seasonal help at every level of production and shipping to accommodate the influx of orders. After the roses are cut, wrapped and boxed, they enter "the cold chain", which keeps them at precisely the correct temperature every step of their trip.
When the roses arrive at the florist, exacting procedures are followed to insure that the flowers bloom in the vase. Seasonal sales people and designers are hired and extra coolers for storage, delivery trucks and drivers are brought in to handle the volume.
So the next time you order Valentine's Day roses think of all the time and care that have gone into your order and remember how fortunate we are to live in a time and place that affords us such a great luxury at such a reasonable price!

 Greetings from the Albany Kaplan Center!
The Albany Kaplan Center is in full swing many local juniors prepping for the SAT in the Spring. There is still time to prep for the March, May or June exam. Remember that most juniors applying to college will be facing not only the SAT but also the ACT and SAT Subject Tests so the earlier you begin the test prep process, the easier it will be on your family!
This month we want to tackle the topic of score choice on the SAT. Just like the ACT, you can decide what scores your colleges see and take into account for the college admission process. There are some rules though. When you register for the SAT, you can choose 4 schools to send your scores to. You can update this information up to 9 days after your test date. You can always send scores to more than 4 colleges but there is a fee for each additional school. Lastly, you must check score choice on the SAT registration form in order to take this process into effect. Check collegeboard.org for more information.
Remember though, you won't actually know your score before it is sent to the colleges so you want to make sure you are always putting your best foot forward when taking the SAT.
