May 2010                                          e-Newsletter     You may have noticed that the Fuller Road improvement project is underway and has caused traffic delays on that route.    Avoid the traffic from I-90 to Fuller Road to Stuyvesant Plaza by continuing on I-90 W to the Western Ave/ I-87 South exit (last exit before Thruway).  Make a left at the light, and we are easily accessible from Western Ave.                 "How can I be sure to buy a shoe that not only looks great, but won't hurt my feet after an hour of wearing them?"   By Melanie Stevenson The Delmar Bootery      Spring is here and most people do want to freshen their shoe selection after the long winter.  Here are some tips for finding a shoe that fits properly.   First, find out if the store has a qualified person equipped to measure your feet.  It's an art, not a science so the measurement you get may not be the same size you always wear.  Don't worry, it's just a starting point.  If there is no qualified clerk to measure, try to bring a friend with you to check where your toes are inside the shoe.  When you bend over to check yourself it causes your foot to contract and actually become shorter.  If a shoe fits you should be able to fit the size of your thumb between your toes and the front of your shoe. When trying on shoes try to go later in the day when your foot is more likely to be a bit swolen so that you know the shoe will be comfortable even after a day of wear.   In a sandal, be sure that your foot covers the whole footbed with a little bit of space above the toes. There should be no overhang in either the front or the back.  Make sure the straps are secure but not tight.  Don't be afraid to try several different sizes.  All shoes are cut differently (even different styles from the same manufacturer or brand) so your "regular" size might not always fit in every style.  It's ok to go up or down a size to get a correct fit.   Before purchasing any shoes, be sure to find out the store's return policy.  Many stores will allow you a few days to wear your new shoes inside the house to try them out and most will allow returns within that period as long as the shoes are in new condition with no signs of wear.   If you have specific foot problems, remember that there are plenty of places that carry wide and narrow sizes as well as specialized shoes for those who need them.    If you do end up with a pair of shoes that are non-returnable, but may be slightly too small or slightly too big, many shoe stores and repair shops carry fitting aids or offer stretching services that may be able to correct your issues.    Nothing compares to a comfortable, well fitting shoe!           TRIVIA CHALLENGE » Sign Up Now!
